Mission Statement
- The Sawmill Community Land Trust is a community-based development corporation whose principal purpose is to promote community ownership, long term affordability and economic opportunity through the community land trust model.
Goals of Sawmill Redevelopment; Adopted By Community in 1996
- A permanent reserve of affordable housing for families at or below 80% of the median income of the area;
- A built environment that retains its physical integrity for future generations and preserves the natural attributes of the land and the cultural history of the community.
- Commercial and Industrial space that benefits the community with job creation and needed services.
- Blending of "old" and "new" into one unified neighborhood.
- Avoiding negative impacts from new development on the existing residents.
- Empower residents to make decisions about their future.
- Insure ecological sensitivity and energy efficiency.
A Practical Vision for the Period 2003 to 2007 Developed at a Board/Staff/Community Retreat in December, 2002
- Sawmill Community Land Trust will be a New Mexico and national model of revitalization.
- Phase II of Arbolera de Vida will be completely built out and 90 new families will be part of the Sawmill Community Land Trust.
- Phase III plan describing the economic development aspects of the project and a roadmap of how to get there will be complete and approved by the community and the City of Albuquerque.
- A Sawmill Redevelopment Plan for the area from Rio Grande to 5th St and I-40 to Mountain Rd will be funded, work completed and the Plan approved by the City. The Plan, to be lead by Sawmill Community Land Trust, will be a collaboration of neighborhood residents, large land small landowners and business people.
- Ponderosa Products (a source of pollution and a blighting influence on the area) will be redeveloped for recreation and housing.
- Sawmill Community Land Trust will continue to develop a strong base of support in the community with 500 members.
- The Sawmill Community Land Trust model will be expanded to adjacent neighborhoods in the form of housing rehabilitation, workforce housing development and commercial redevelopment.
- Sawmill Community Land Trust will be financially autonomous and have an operating reserve.
